Africa Cinema Summit will be hosted in Ghana by NFA

The inaugural Africa Cinema Summit, to be held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra from November 14–16, 2023, is being organized by the National Film Authority (NFA) of Ghana.

In order to discuss the unique characteristics of the African film landscape, as well as the potential and challenges of the African film industry, the Africa Cinema Summit is a forum for players in the African film industry. In addition, it will strive to create an atmosphere of interactivity and welcome where the participants can make contact with one another, develop contacts, gain leads or complete sales on both sides of the event.

A great culture of going to the movies may be lost to the world forever, depriving the world of the magic of cinema, says Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Film Authority and one of the summit conveners. If film stakeholders can’t figure out a way to get the largest youth population into the theaters, Africa won’t be the only loser. Major businesses may also collapse.

She expressed her enthusiasm for working towards making the cinema experience accessible to Africans who desire and deserve it, as well as promoting Africa internationally and providing business clarity. According to her, it is an exciting opportunity. Key speakers at the event include John Michael Schreiner, Imax Corp’s Senior Vice President of Theatre Development for Europe, Middle East, and Africa; Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority; Moses Babatope, Co-founder and Deputy Managing Director of Filmhouse Group; and Funmi Onuma, Country Manager of Silverbird Cinema in Ghana.

Other participants include Ope Ajayi, who is a distributor at Cinemax and also holds the role of President at the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria. Additionally, Rob Arthur, Co-founder and Director of Entertainment Solution Services Ltd and Paguro Ideas Ltd, Marie Lora-Mungai, an investor and strategic advisor specializing in the African creative industries and sports business, and Chief Alhassan Andani, the founder and executive chairman of LVSafrica Limited, are also in attendance.

The summit is organized in partnership with Filmhouse Group (Nigeria) and Silverbird Cinema (Ghana).
